Making a Statement

Hope you all have the third issue of the Voice in your hands by now... and that you've checked out the ad on the back page, which explains that you can show off your favorite new publication by buying a t-shirt, a mug, a tote bag, or--yes, even a thong!

We hope to make more items with various sayings available in the future, and if you have suggestions, please let us know. We hope to see you sporting the Voice logo around town very soon!

Party People in the House

A whole lot has been going on as we've celebrated our very first issue of the New River Voice. And it's about time for an update!

Check out our Flickr page for photos of the paper being printed, our launch party, and the ribbon cutting at Bisset Park with the Radford City Mayor.

Thanks to Mayor Starnes, Main Street Newspapers, the Montgomery County Chamber, Main Street Radford, El Charro, and our faithful friends and supporters for making all of these events so fabulous!

We've Published!

If you live in the New River Valley of Southwest Virginia, look for the New River Voice at various restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, and various other outlets all across the Valley. The New River Voice is a free, biweekly publication, so pick up the first issue now and look for another to be released Sept. 6.

The Web site for the Voice has not been updated with content from the first issue yet, but that should be coming up soon.

Check Us Out on MySpace

Here's what's weird, I swear I posted about our new MySpace page last week, but for some reason it apparently never showed up. That's unfortunate. But hey, moving on.

We're on MySpace! Check out the new page and be our friend.

The first issue is inching nearer. Lots of work to be done between now and then, but things are coming together.

Hey Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?

OK, so maybe a lot of dimes. Things are continuing to move forward for the New River Voice. We've made considerable progress in just about every area except for advertising. Our ad sales reps are just now hitting the streets but don't wait for them to come to you! Go ahead and contact us.

We'll be distributing 10,000 copies of the Voice every two weeks and we're running special deals for those who jump on the bandwagon now--a reward for those who have faith in us before the first issue is printed. Contact us for more advertising info!
advertising@newrivervoice.com

If you'd like to have a few copies of the New River Voice at your place of business, we'd love to have you as one of our distributors. Contact distribution@newrivervoice.com for that request.

I am looking forward to you joining us to create a better sense of community in our area and in opening up the kind of dialog and debate that is often missing in today's society. And if you just want to pick up our publication for the calendar of events, that's OK, too! We'll have something for everyone!

Too Legit ...

It's odd how certain things make you feel like a more legitimate business. Just this past week, we got our business cards printed. Somehow, the ability to hand someone a card makes the New River Voice seem that much closer to becoming a reality. But what REALLY is making it seem closer to a reality is the fact that sales reps have their cards and sales kits in hand and are actually hitting the streets to sell the New River Voice.

Look for other updates to come soon.

Progress Continues

Starting a new publication isn't quick or easy, but I'm sure hoping that it's personally rewarding. And I think it will be. One of the reasons that I think it will is because it will strive to build a better sense of community in our area. I'd like to see that happen on different levels: more sense of community within YOUR neighborhood, YOUR zip code, the New River Valley, and Southwest Virginia as a whole.

To build this sense of community, I'll need your help. If you are a writer, photographer, or graphic designer, we could use your talents. Contact us at editorial@newrivervoice.com.

We need people to sell advertising for the New River Voice, and we definitely need advertisers to buy ads for the paper edition of the Voice as well as its Web site. If you're interested in becoming a Voice advertiser, contact us at advertising@newrivervoice.com.

And not to be forgotten, we need many, many distribution points throughout the New River Valley. If your place of business is available as a drop point for the New River Voice, contact us at distribution@newrivervoice.com.

We're looking forward to serving the New River Valley and building those strong ties that will make us better as an overall community.

We Want to Hear Your Voice!

The New River Voice will be a publication that connects with the community. And for that reason, we are looking for volunteer bloggers who can let us know what's happening in their part of the NRV. So from Pearisburg to Pulaski, Eggleston to Elliston, Fairlawn to Floyd, we want members of the community to be the eyes and ears for the rest of us. Let us know the events in your area. Give us the latest news from your neck of the woods.

Wanna know how to have your voice heard by Voice readers as a blogger? Contact us at editorial@newrivervoice.com.

Also, we need a name for our street team of Voice bloggers, and we're looking for suggestions from you! Let us know your thoughts for a name of this fine group of citizens by sending us an e-mail to the address above.

Stay tuned for more updates on the New River Voice!

Get Ready for a New Voice in the Valley!

The New River Voice will be a bi-weekly alternative newspaper and companion Web site that serves the New River Valley in Southwest Virginia. The New River Voice will cover the people, politics, and culture of the area. It will provide in-depth news analysis, beyond the coverage of traditional newspapers, and will offer news about the arts and entertainment of the region.

Look for our debut in August! But until then, this blog will detail the process—and the progress made—in starting up such a publication. We have a LOT of work to do, and for you to get a new voice for the valley, we need your help!

Right now the Voice is looking to put together a team of advertising sales representatives. See the ad for the position here.

Also, if you are a southwest Virginia author (sorry no self-published or children's books at this time) or an area band and have a book or CD that you'd like us to review, send it to our attention at:
New River Voice
P.O. Box 1411
Radford, VA 24143

Likewise, if you're a publisher or record label that works with artists and writers in the New River Valley, add us to your mailing list.

And if you have suggestions on articles that you'd like to see in the New River Voice, let us know by contacting us at
editorial@newrivervoice.com

And last, but in no way least, we need advertisers! If you want a new, exciting, and progressive publication in the NRV, we need plenty of advertisers because the cost to you, the reader, for each issue of the Voice is nothing. Zero! Nada! It's gonna be free! But to give you a free publication every two weeks, and for us to be able to eat, we'll need some ad dollars. So get the word out about your business by advertising to the super-cool readers of the Voice. We'll be distributing 10,000 copies of the Voice every two weeks! Contact us for more advertising info!
advertising@newrivervoice.com

Oh, and speaking of distribution and circulation (I guess advertising wasn't last), if you'd like to have a few copies of the New River Voice at your place of business, we'd love to have you as one of our drop points. For now, contact editorial@newrivervoice.com for that request.

Get ready New River Valley. Things are going to get interesting. We're looking forward to serving you!
